Detailed Itinerary

DAY 2

Students, teachers and chaperones will be able to use the bathroom facilities of the Grant-Humphreys Mansion to prepare for the day. A light breakfast will be provided, such as bananas, bagels and juice. Groups that consider this insufficient may supplement with items brought themselves. Part of the morning will include packing up gear and making sure that the house is left in an acceptable condition. The Gear Guards will remain behind to verify this.

Once downtown, students will most likely be broken into two groups. One group will see the state capitol while the other group is participating in the Byers-Evans program ‘An Afternoon into the Past.’ Once each group is done, they will switch places.

The state capitol, finished in 1908, is a fine example of American capitol architecture, and includes many details representative of Colorado. Your tour of the capitol will include the rotunda and the grounds, including the famous Mile High Step.

The Byers-Evans House offers an exciting opportunity to learn about life in Denver around the 1918 time period. The program is called An Afternoon into the Past. Participants will be able to learn about people who lived in, worked in or who visited the Byers-Evans House from this past time. They will wear a part of a costume, such as a hat or apron, while being guided through this original 1883 Victorian home. Along the way, students will be able to take part in activities appropriate to the 1918 time period, such as playing the phonograph, grinding coffee or using a stereoscope. This portion of Denver Discovery Camp is always very popular.

If additional time is available at any point during Denver Discovery Camp, our expert tour guides will show other areas of interest as possible.

Busses will meet the Gear Guards at the Grant-Humphreys Mansion at 12:30 to recover all personal items, and meet the students at the Byers-Evans House at 1:00 to gather students and other attendees. For those departing on a Saturday, Gear Guardians should make arrangements to have themselves and the group’s possessions picked up at the Grant-Humphreys Mansion and brought to the Byers-Evans House for dissemination.
