Who was Grant?

James Benton Grant was our second state governor after statehood. He was involved heavily in the smelting industry and ran the Grant Smelter in Globeville.

He married nationally famous Mary Goodell, one of the Five American Beauties. They planned their home in the 1880s but completion was delayed by the Silver Panic of 1893. They lived in the home from 1902 to 1911.

Grant also had a brother, two sons and two nephews—so there were many male Grants.

Grant Ranch in southwest Denver is named for him too—it was his ranch.
