What is a Gear Guard, and what do they do?

  • Each Denver Discovery Camp group will have two Gear Guards, responsible for supervising the sleeping and other assorted items of the participants not necessary for the general process of daytime activities.
  • The Gear Guards should be physically fit and capable of moving numerous sleeping bags, small pieces of luggage and other assorted items.
  • The Gear Guards should have at least one cell phone amongst them in order to facilitate finding the main group upon completion of tasks.
  • The Gear Guards will be provided with detailed, clear and written instructions of all duties, based on the outline below:
    • Gear Guards will, once the students, teachers and other chaperones have been dropped off at the Byers-Evans House, accompany the bus/busses to the Grant-Humphreys Mansion where they will be met by a representative of the Colorado Historical Society staffing the mansion.
    • With the guidance of the mansion staff, the Gear Guards will take all items necessary for the overnight stay at the Grant-Humphreys Mansion and place them within the mansion, generally in the Ballroom.
    • The Gear Guards will then proceed to the 0 Bus and return downtown. Bus fares will be provided by Denver Discovery Camp.
    • Once downtown, the Gear Guards should locate their group and join them; cell phones will help facilitate this process.
    • On the morning of the second day, the Gear Guards will remain behind while the students depart for morning activities. The Gear Guards will be responsible for any additional cleaning necessary (if not completed by students) in order to leave the Grant-Humphreys Mansion presentable. The Gear Guards will then return downtown in order to join their groups.
    • The Gear Guards will return to the Grant-Humphreys Mansion via the 0 Bus to meet the bus/busses there at 12:30, where they will again be met by a member of the mansion staff.
    • The Gear Guards will move all gear onto the bus/busses and return to the Byers-Evans House in order to pick up the students and depart.
  • Again, Gear Guards will be provided with bus fares, complete written directions and bus schedules in order to facilitate their movement during performance of these duties.
